Where There is Smoke, Their is Fire!

Might I recommend that you try watching this game between Bologan and Bacrot by paning your browser, with the video on one side, then actual game in your chess viewer on the other?

The way I did it, I moved the curser in chessBase move for move at exactly the same speed of the game.

It is from the first the ACP World Rapid Chess Cup in Odessa, Ukraine [1]. That these guys can really play chess--like other similarly endowed Super Grandmasters--with nerves of steel cannot be doubted. Enjoy!

Impatient viewers can move to the 5:40 mark with Bologan's very tense 31.e6, when things really heat up. No one disagrees that that is Korchnoi's unique voice in the background?

On one short personal note, I am currently spending several hours each day in job hunting. As French anthropologist Rene Dubos once said:

"In many ways, modern man is like an animal kept in a zoo, protected from the inclemencies, confined and depriving him of many of the natural stimulae essential for the well being of his mind and body".

That about says what it is like--home alone all week, cyber knocking on doors and occassionally on the telephone in an equally arcane and impersonal, dissociated world. Man.

Warmest, dk

"...confined and depriving him of many of the natural stimulae essential for the well being of his mind and body".

Once our biological knowledge is sufficient and computers strong enough, it will be simple. We'll know the exact chemicals to inject, pills to take, and machines to graft into our bodies in order to make us happy, productive, and optimal. Making the need for such trivialities "natural stimulae" and "human interaction" obsolete.

How's the job search going?

Tue Feb 10, 09:42:00 AM PST

@pawn shaman: i admit to having an unusually broad grasp of business and communication and leadership at this point, but health care is always at off or to the bottom of my list. not to any intrinsic cause, but its just not me. i am very caring, but just like the boy sees the girl and just knows, so i know here. the one exception is territory sales in medical products, but i am not experienced in that market.... i have zero medical experience.

i just go an email for a contract non-technical position at Microsoft helping to manage the gaming beta division, and am not a gamer, but at least play chess...

a recruiter in India found my resume on Monster (not my best resource, but some do pop up), and had my phone interview with the seattle based recruiter, and evidently am eligable for the next round.

@ivan. it is very, very hard. i am actually very, very heavy into chessBase in the evenings, in badly needed downtime and have been carving out and polishing my repertoire in a big way, and heavy into CTS (headed to 50,000 at 90.1% by 49,600, at a run rate of last 1,500 at 98.2%),

and spend hours per day in job markets. i have close to zero urge to email even close friends nothing save, one to two line emails, except for the IM Candidate i am mentoring in effectiveness and communication, and planning and structuring his effort. very rewarding, but dont charge him.

this affects bloggin directly, of course...

my second interview this week is with a SaaS or software as service providor. and, yes, he is from India and odds are 98% he is from the Microsoft culture, spawned amply in these parts.

the way of the world. take up chinese, hindi, sea kayaking, survival skills, hydroponic gardening, and canning.

expressing architect and broker and former senior non-managment Lowes employee into Territory Sales and Project, Program, and Knowledge Managment is very challenging. most reluctantly, i had to completely redo my resume, and spent 13 of 17 days writing and rewriting. i now have a two page and amazing, but even a one page version.

actually, blunderprone was the first to point out the need to redo it as a structure-functional resume, do deflect the out of place Lowes cronologically. smart dude.

lastly, there is tremendous fraud in job markets, and weaving around that, dodging it is a real challenge. you cannot believe the harmful schemes out there... you get an email asking you to apply for a project management position. then another asking about your scientitifci skills. and you kindly tell them, if they want to talk, it must be for your non-technical project management skills, and not a scientist!

next thing you know, you get an email offering training for just $1995. you opt out. a month latter, something similar from someone else. you opt out. but, just to make sure, call them in Ottawa and lay the law down, its all work. you have to protect yourself.

warmest, dk

I hear you. And its good to know where you stand, what you enjoy. It also sounds like you could make a lot of money which is a bonus ;).

Blogger transformation said...

@pawn shaman: i can assure you, A. making a bunch of money is the farthest thing from my mind. i want to get the task right, with the right people, the right product or service, 100%. i hate to say this, but i have seen too much stupidity in my life. when the relations are wrong, or the product or service faulted, it is an embarassment. so many fail.

B. microsoft is not what it was ten or fifteen years ago. i would be honored to work for them, for access to a new perspective, but its probably become too big, hires many contractors, and the stock will NOT soar as before. you would be shocked if you knew what they are offering me to go in as a contractor. i am a bargan. interview tomorrow. i am not arrogant about it, just realistic.

another interview today. believe me, when you have 26+years of business experience, you interview them even if they THINK they are interviewing you, and are older than most of those qualifying you, more experienced. i am 2500 in business, but i am not 30 any more.

its like dating. again, same. there is so little that i can accept. i am picky in my old age, and see into things quickly. :)

warmly, dk

hello dk,

Interesting mention about Microsoft.

About 8 years ago, my company was asked to send someone to Microsoft to help with development on Win98/Win2000 in Building 27A/B (that's the building near the Homestead Village suite of motels on the main campus) in Seattle and I was tasked to go.

When the project was completed, surprisingly, I got offered a job there by one of the dept heads (in charge of future OS development) who was impressed with my work while I was there.

However, the pay was slightly below the industry std but MS hoped to sign me on via enticement of share allotments.

In the end, after weighing the pros/cons, I declined and turned down the offer. The dept head left about a year later to work for a startup instead.

Funnily enough, I met my wife a year after the interview and got hitched some time later.

Since then, I've constantly wondered what my life would have turned out if I had signed for them?

cheers and hope everything turned out to your satisfaction.

i very deeply value the comments and well wishes of everyone... tanc (happy hippo, drunkn knight), but i am doing, what my therapist from 1995-1997 used to call:

'Deep UV Work'.

there are, as many of you must have heard, 700 applicants or more for ONE janitorial jobs (a job that i would love, its DIRECT and no nonesense!),

my father is dieing.

and i am sorting the detretus of more than 15 years unwinding my wall street career and thereafter...

AND if that were not enough, play bullet daily at FICS AND am and have been making an entire repertoire.

i cook all my own food, often but not always organic vegetables, run every day...

finally, i need to write post 199 to repay a debt of gratitude and have a block there, then write the BIG chessBase post, as number 200. why lower standards now????????????

love to all beings, dk

Hey! Look! A DK blog post!!!! :)

[damn it, google ate 2/3rds of my message, retry]

due to job hunting, i had to move the posts on depression so far back only someone who really looked for them or knew where to find them could.

i am making a video, so instead of the big chessBase 200th article, post, it will be the video.

this is piggy backed on business video i hired my oldest friend, who is a true genius, and the most creative person i have ever known, by far--coming from me, thats saying a lot--Tom Fallat of SoundSsound Studios in Seattle. i met him 29.75 years ago hitch hiking in NJ leaving a mall, where i went to look at da Vinchi anatomical drawing books :)

he owns and operates a 12 track, digital video editing studio, and we are making a intro video to go with my job applications.

he is what i said, to Phaedrus in a note, last night:

'I have been writing fewer letters but letters five times more carefully. If volume were the answer, I’d be ok by now. Of course, I cannot just sit back, but I took the States advise to ALL OF US, ‘whatever you are doing, you need to do it differently from here on out’. Great advise. Its like I have gone from slow blitz and normal fast blitz to standard games in business writing—good analogy. I even have one move a day type letters. …'

job markets are tough, super tough. i cant get a 60k a year job, and no one will hire me for a $15 an hour job, even if i tone it all down.

see resume added to links at ALL my blogs now, for the morbidly curious.

its easy. Oh yea. prodigy architect who left NY to go live in a Zen temple in Korea who is an expert in construction contract administration and engineering design, who left Morgan Stanley inches shy of Senior VP (i was a +++ First VP), on sabatical for two years then took a job at Lowes in millwork, then flooring, then tools, and was a fork lift trainer, for the average corporate joe to reframe that, why thats easy.

'My abiding love: Patterns. Architecture-Running-Japanese-Kanji-Karate; stocks-climbing-inner work; integrative study-chess-fine cooking-blog'

im at twitter now, and this last line, i wrote in draft. i have already drafted 100 tweets, and slowly polish them out, trying to let as many out as pearls each day, slowly, and rhythmically paced. recently, i am slightly less formal, but have many Zen-Knowledge Management, global idiosynratic view tweets.

cf. heuristcal at twitter. at first, i refused to join, in fact, hated the idea. but now i see, its the way west in laying out the rails.

to me it all fits, but well, i am dk

love you guys and gals!
